Just in time for the new year, our 6th annual Filipino American History Calendar is hot off the press and ready for you to order. Sold Out

At only $10, it's the perfect gift for everyone and an affordable way to learn Filipino American history. Each month features a historic photograph from the Filipino American National Historical Society's extensive archives as well as community members' personal albums, as well as important dates in Philippine and Filipino American History. This year's cover features glamorous Helen Lagrimas Liwanag, a manang who was born in Roseville, CA in 1913 and raised in Stockton. Her family owned the Manila Service Station in Stockton's Little Manila in the 1940s and 1950s.

If you had your 2011 Calendar, you would know Dec. 13 in 1928, California farmers passed a resolution to exclude Filipino immigration. Also, Dec. 13 in 1941, Filipinos in Stockton called a boycott of Japanese businesses and wore "I Am Filipino" buttons to protect against anti-Japanese racial violence that unfortunately erupted against Asian Americans during World War II . And those are just a few examples of all you will learn from our calendar!

All calendar proceeds benefit the preservation efforts of the Little Manila Foundation and the Museum Fund of the Filipino American National Historical Society.

WHERE TO BUY: (SOLD OUT)

Online - Little Manila Foundation Online Store
- Because of USPS delays and possible inclement weather, we cannot guarantee Christmas delivery, but ordering by NOON Friday 12/16 is your best bet. RES. 287

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES - October 5, 2011

Mr. REID (for himself, Mrs. FEINSTEIN, Mrs. GILLIBRAND, Mr. AKAKA, Mr. INOUYE, Mr. MENENDEZ, Mr. LAUTENBERG, Mr. SCHUMER, Mrs. MURRAY, Mr. DURBIN, and Mr. HELLER) submitted the following resolution; which was considered and agreed to

RESOLUTION

Designating October 2011 as `Filipino American History Month'.

Whereas October 18, 1587, when the first `Luzones Indios' set foot in Morro Bay, California, on board the Manila-built galleon ship Nuestra Senora de Esperanza, marks the earliest documented Filipino presence in the continental United States;

Whereas the Filipino American National Historical Society recognizes the year of 1763 as the date of the first permanent Filipino settlement in the United States in St. Malo, Louisiana;

Whereas the recognition of the first permanent Filipino settlement in the United States adds new perspective to United States history by bringing attention to the economic, cultural, social, and other notable contributions that Filipino Americans have made in countless ways toward the development of the United States;

Whereas the Filipino-American community is the third largest Asian-American group in the United States, with a population of approximately 3,417,000 individuals;

Whereas Filipino-American servicemen and servicewomen have a longstanding history of serving in the Armed Forces, from the Civil War to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, including the 250,000 Filipinos who fought under the United States flag during World War II to protect and defend the United States;

Whereas 9 Filipino Americans have received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Forces;

Whereas Filipino Americans play an integral role in the United States health care system as nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals;

Whereas Filipino Americans have contributed greatly to music, dance, literature, education, business, literature, journalism, sports, fashion, politics, government, science, technology, the fine arts, and other fields in the United States that enrich the landscape of the country;

Whereas efforts should continue to promote the study of Filipino-American history and culture, as mandated in the mission statement of the Filipino American National Historical Society, because the roles of Filipino Americans and other people of color largely have been overlooked in the writing, teaching, and learning of United States history;

Whereas it is imperative for Filipino-American youth to have positive role models to instill in them the significance of education, complemented with the richness of their ethnicity and the value of their legacy; and

Whereas Filipino American History Month is celebrated during the month of October 2011: Now, therefore, be it

STAR OF ‘AMIGO’ COMES TO STOCKTON SUNDAY

ACTOR JOEL TORRE WILL ANSWER FANS’ QUESTIONS AFTER 1:40 P.M. MATINEE SCREENING AT REGAL CITY CENTER

PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR THE FOCUS OF WRITER/DIRECTOR JOHN SAYLES FILM OPENS NATIONALLY THIS FRIDAY

(NEW YORK – 18 July. Updated 12 Aug.) – On the heels of his film’s national opening this weekend, popular multi-awarded actor Joel Torre will make a special appearance in Stockton Sunday to meet and interact with filmgoers and fans.

Joel, who plays Rafael Dacanay, the village mayor at the onset of the Philippine-American War, will answer audience questions and greet attendees following the 1:40 p.m. matinee, Sunday, Aug. 21 exclusively at the Regal City Center, 222 N. El Dorado Street.

Later, Joel will also make a similar appearance following the 3:55 p.m. screening at the Century 20 Great Mall in Milpitas, 1010 Great Mall Drive.

Both appearances are included in the regular price of theater admission. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office in advance or, if not sold out, on the day of the screening.

Set during the Philippine-American War at the turn of the previous century and filmed entirely in The Philippines, AMIGO -- the 17th feature film from Academy Award-nominated writer-director John Sayles -- features a stellar international ensemble cast and, in a bit of film history, an all-too rare film about one of the least-filmed American wars.

AMIGO stars Academy Award® winner Chris Cooper, Garrett Dillahunt (“Winter’s Bone,” “No Country For Old Men”), Tony nominee Yul Vazquez (“The A-Team,” “War of the Worlds”), DJ Qualls (“Hustle and Flow”) and among the more decorated and respected thespians from The Philippines in Joel Torre, Rio Locsin, Ronnie Lazaro, Bembol Roco and Arthur Acuna.

Rafael Dacanay (Joel Torre) is a village mayor caught in the murderous crossfire of the Philippine-American War.

When U.S. troops occupy his village, Rafael comes under pressure from a tough-as-nails officer (Chris Cooper) to help the Americans in their hunt for Filipino guerilla fighters. But Rafael’s brother (Ronnie Lazaro) is the head of the local guerillas, and considers anyone who cooperates with the Americans to be a traitor. Rafael quickly finds himself forced to make the impossible, potentially deadly decisions faced by ordinary civilians in an occupied country.

A powerful drama of friendship, betrayal, romance and heartbreaking violence, AMIGO is a page torn from the rarely-filmed history of the Philippines and America, and a mirror of today’s irresolvable conflicts.

AMIGO opens for week-long runs at in the following cities and dates:
