Is it Two-thousand-twelve already?!

Happy New Year y'all!

Alma and I hope that you had a restful Winter vacation with family, food and fun! With Winter Formal right around the corner, there are upcoming class events, community service opportunities and application deadlines for y'all to pay attention to before the big night. Interested? Read on!

This Week

- Community Agreements: Building Foundations for a New Year - This will be a quick activity developing guidelines and expectations for these last two quarters of the school year. We need your input and we'd LOVE your participation, so come through and you'll receive a token of our sincerest gratitude. :)

- LMASP on Tuesdays - we've changed class dates to Tuesdays each week to increase our availibility to y'all and to keep the program more consistent. Please do take advantage of our time after school especially if you need homework help, resources for history projects or need a space to think, chill, laugh, act, sing or dance!

- Class Movie Night - Friday, January 13 | 7:00pm | Stockton Empire Theater - Alma and I invite y'all to come chill with us after after school to watch Amigo (2010), a film about the American occupation in the Philippines during the Philippine-American war. It is part of a film festival put on by the San Joaquin County Film Society and this film is being co-presented with The Little Manila Foundation. Join us! We'll be meeting a little earlier to have drinks at the fabulous Empresso Cafe just in the theater's lobby. Movie Time: 8:15pm, Tickets: $8 (Bring Student ID). This is also an opportunity to earn some Community Service hours, read on for more info!

- PYC Application Deadline - Apps are due the day after our first class session of 2012, January 11. If you are interested in attending and have consulted your parents, we will be having applications availible for y'all to fill out in class! The fee waiver deadline is way past due. But if there are extreme circumstances where you need financial assistance or help with transportation, talk to us (Alma/Brian) and we can work something out.

Community Service Opportunities

- Little Manila Crab Feed (3 hours) - Volunteers are needed to help serve food at the Little Manila Foundation's annual Crab Feed. Duties include arriving on time, serving and preparing food and drink, interacting with guests and staying until dismissed. Event details: Saturday, Jan. 14 from 6pm - 9pm.

- Write up for Movie Night (2 hours) - If you come through for movie night and feel inspired to write up a one page, double spaced reflection paper on the film, we will credit your time with us as community service. Please let us know if you decide to do this! Event details: Friday, Jan. 13, meet at 7pm, movie starts at 8:15pm.

If you got this far, thanks for reading! See you in a few days!

2012 should be a year for food safety. With may food hygiene certification courses online, I bet people do not have to worry on how to know the guidelines in basic safety of handling foods for consumption.
